Japan 395: Current Issues and Solutions
Course Description:
This course is designed to develop advanced use of Japanese in three modes of communication using the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals’ framework. Students will be able to understand and discuss Japanese major issues in society through authentic resources and propose possible solutions critically. This course is taught in Japanese.
Course Narrative:
In this course we primarily focused on sustainable development goals (SDG's) completely taught in Japanese. Every week we went over new vocabulary which was very challenging. What was even more challenging was trying to express these complex topics into coherent discussions amongst the students. We went over food loss, climate change, and other various environmental topics. Discussing such topics was difficult, but felt very rewarding. The students were expected to facilitate two discussions encompassing a SDG, and the others were expected to each give their own input. We also had to break up into small groups and create a presentation trying to be as coherent and fluid as possible while talking about a problem and offering a solution we thought would be the best course of action. This course follows MLO 1: Language and MLO 2: Culture as we spoke about these topics on how it impacts Japanese society and what they're specifically doing to combat these problems.
