JAPN 397 Indepent Study
Course Description:
This course further develops advanced level Japanese through building and expanding knowledge of Japanese history as a dynamic, interrelated system and employs a variety of processes to identify, analyze and evaluate cultural themes, values and ideas. Students will demonstrate ability to accurately comprehend ideas across a range of historical content. Taught in Japanese.
Course Narrative:
JAPN 397 (302) has taught me a lot of various historical people, works of art, and different themes starting from the seventh century. I learned about Shoutoku Taishi, Murasaki Shikibus' Tale of Genji, Nichiren's teachings, etc. Doing my weekly readings, I answered questions and discussion posts to gain knowledge on each topic. My greatest challenge in this course was trying to read the old Japanese names, especially with names. I never knew that within the name of these historical figures, they used "No" after the family name. Another challenge was having to answer in Japanese as my speaking is a bit weaker than my listening comprehension. I hope to keep retain this knowledge and try to make learning social mannerisms easier when I work in Japan in the future.
