JAPN 311: Social Issues In Japan
Course Description:
As the drive to rebuild modern Japan after WWII slowed, latent and new social problems have become visible. This course offers interdisciplinary perspectives on issues such as care of the elderly and homeless, equal treatment of minorities, gender and labor issues, domestic and world ecological concerns, and relevant institutions that promote or attack prejudice towards heterogeneous social groups. Taught in English.
Course Narrative:
We went over many different societal problems within Japan. I thought this was a good course as it shows that not every country is without it's flaws. We went over topics such as problems within the workforce, minority groups, gendered labor, issues surrounding Okinawa, etc. Each week we had to submit a post responding to the readings respective to the topic with what our thoughts were after those readings. We had to write two pieces of writing for an article review and final paper.
