JAPN 410 - Quakes and Nukes: (Un)Natural Japanese Environments
Course Description:
We read and discuss the Japanese archipelago from multiple scientific and humanistic perspectives. Students will engage with material from scientific journals, films, history monographs, anthropological studies, and Japanese manga (comics). In doing so, students will learn the basics of Japanese geology, Pacific seismology (the “Ring of Fire”), the causes and effects of nuclear radiation, and the changes to the land that modern industrialization have brought to the Japanese archipelago.
Course Narrative:
Throughout this course, we went over Japanese history and major events specifically those from a scientific perspective as well as how it has affected the people there. We went over major devistations such as catastrophic earth quakes and the triple disaster in Japan. We watched various films and went over readings to try to capture many different perspectives. I recall the controversy surrounding on if nuclear power should be used, and learned that it can be used as long as it's handled properly. However fearmongering is something I learned that is in every country. This fulfills MLO 2: Culture.
